Immigration and Tourist Visa Update March 2020

Due to the impact of the Covid-19 Coronavirus pandemic, the Mexican government has closed all INM offices and immigration services until further notice. They’ve been closed for several days now, flights are being cancelled, and border restrictions are being put in place all over the world. One of the big questions for visitors has been:

“What happens if I overstay my tourist visa?”

Here’s the answer:

If you’re in Mexico on a tourist visa (FMM) at present, there is no official extension for the tourist visa, but the government has informed us that there will be no penalties for overstaying your tourist visa. It is better for you to stay in Mexico than to risk spreading or catching the virus while traveling.

My temporary resident visa expires soon – what do I do?

If it’s time to renew your temporary resident visa / residente temporal, the offices will accept your application to renew, as it is not something they can currently modify in their system. So, let’s say your visa expires next week. They will receive your application, because if you don’t submit it before the deadline, you would have to start again.

I’m getting my temporary or permanent resident visa – can I do this now?

The same goes for the “Canje” or changing your tourist visa for either a temporary or permanent resident visa. You will have to submit the application three days before the expiration.

We at Easy Legal Mexico will be available to advise you on any changes and updates, but we do want to reiterate that all of the procedures and services from the immigration authorities will be unavailable until further notice. At this point, they do not have an approximate date to re-open and resume providing immigration services.

We will keep you all updated with any changes. Meanwhile you can sign up for our email list at www.easylegalmexico.com or schedule a time to talk via phone to address your specific needs and situation.

Stay safe and healthy, and let’s slow down the spread of this COVID-19 Coronavirus!
